August 11: Because the Research Tell Us So…
Birds Gotta Fly; School Librarians = Wings, Susan Ballard
Think about it – birds have to leave the nest at some point and the odds are against them; yet with the right preparation they can survive and most importantly, thrive. School Librarians are in a unique position to be the variable in a fledgling student’s success, but we have to understand the environment in which they will soar or be grounded and vulnerable. School librarians need to connect the dots between current research and best practice in order to provide solid evidence of effectiveness and sustainability of effort. We matter, and make a difference, and it is time to demonstrate that we can feather the nest for our students as well as nudge them out of it.
Susan Ballard is Director of Library Media and Technology Services for the Londonderry School District and is the current chair of AASL’s Standards and Guidelines Implementation Task Force, more popularly known as the “Learning 4Life” initiative. She is an instructor for graduate level courses at Rutgers and this fall will be co-teaching a course entitled “School Library Leadership in 21st Century Schools” as part of a new series designed for librarians in practice at the University of Vermont. The series will provide professional development for implementing the new AASL Standards via an online cohort and development of a professional learning community.
August 12: Strong Nests, Successful Students:
Skills & Strategies for 21st Century Learning, Annette Lamb
Birds are constantly rebuilding and strengthening their nests. Strong nests provide a nurturing environment for chicks to grow. The introduction of the revised standards allows us a chance to rebuild our teaching and learning nest. Are you building a strong foundation for your students? Explore practical ideas and strategies for addressing the skills needed by 21st century learners. Through collaborations among media specialists, technology coordinators, administrators, and classroom teachers, we can motivate and challenge students across the curriculum.
Dr. Annette Lamb has been a school library media specialist, computer teacher, and professor of education and library science. Annette is well-known for her realistic approaches to technology integration and information inquiry, focusing on practical, technology-rich approaches to teaching and learning. Her roots in library, media, and technology are reflected in her passion for interdisciplinary approaches, reading and writing across the curriculum, and using a variety of resources from books to the Internet. www.eduscapes.com

Do you have an estimate for staying overnight and meals? Thanks!
Linda,
We are not booking a block of rooms for this conference, but Kathy looked at Hotels.com and checked out some major chains in Concord. Most
of them are rated 4 stars and for those dates they run on average $125 per
night for 2 person occupancy. Some of the cheaper ones are not rated as
well. As far restaurants go anywhere from Common Man and Angelinas to Applebees and Outback.
There is a continental breakfast, lunch, and snack included in the conference fee for each day.
Hope this helps ~ Helen
