August 9–Kristin Fontichiaro: Instructional Cross-Training: Preparing for the Decathlon Ahead
From Common Core to the nightly news, there’s no doubt that teachers are being asked to do more and more with fewer and fewer resources. At the same time, we librarians are hungry to give our students deep, meaningful learning experiences. Like decathletes, librarians must develop a wide variety of skills and strategies in order to bridge these goals and help students cross the finish line. In this daylong workshop, we’ll take time to reflect on our instructional practice, brush up on teaching strategies, and make implementation plans for the coming year. Join us as we stretch our muscles and work together to build our stamina and refresh our instructional toolkit. We’ll divide the day into three sections:
- Brushing up on inquiry-based learning strategies to support our implementation of the AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner
- Putting those strategies to work in harmony with the Common Core Standards
- Considering how we can share this knowledge with our school communities via professional development
Kristin Fontichiaro is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, where she coordinates the school library media program. She is the author of several professional books and the editor of 21st-Century Learning in School Libraries (Libraries Unlimited, 2009). Named an Emerging Leader by the American Library Association, she blogs about school libraries at http://blog.schoollibrarymonthly.com and writes the “Nudging Toward Inquiry” column for School Library Monthly.
August 10–Peg Sullivan: A Summer Grilling of Sacred Cows
If “Think, Create, Share, and Grow” is the future then what physical form do we give libraries to support that ideology? While a definitive answer is tied to the financial and human resources of your school district, the educational vision of your district and your state, and a willingness to explore and champion change, we will pose questions and look at answers.
Traditional spaces designed to warehouse large collections of content feel wrong, antiquated. Why? Are casual lounge environments becoming the answer? Why that answer is attractive but doomed. Should libraries simply be reborn as a learning commons? Is this the answer or an interim solution? And how much space is enough? Will librarians drown in an ocean of space with too many resources and students to manage? Or will the space dry up and blow away as the resources and students migrate to a new place?
So we return to the bottom-line question: What will the physical space for “Think, Create, Share and Grow” look like? And if you saw it, would you recognize it? It will be a day filled with questioning the traditional school library and the educational, architectural and emotional sacred cows that space has housed since the 1950’s.
Margaret Sullivan (Peg) is the Library Marketing and Sales Manager at Smith System where she is developing a new concept for K-12 library furniture. She also consults with schools through her Library Resource Group LLC, a unique consulting firm focused on the library design strategies needed to complement 21st Century schools.
